i remember back when i first hooked up w/ the Majors...it was the Fall of '86...my buddy Chris McCorvey (aka "Mort"...remember him? he's still alive and kickin'...just not ridin' these days...)...Mort ran into John Bradford somewhere around columbus. if you remember, Mort was a STRONG-BOY and quickly proved his worthiness and soon got hooked up w/ George and the fellas. Mort was on my case to start riding w/ the Majors...i was reluctant at first - being a young, smart-ass, know-it-all at the time - and i'm sure the Majors watched this snot-nosed kid with a wary, skeptical eye!

Mort did some trips w/ the Majors around the country...NYC comes to mind, fixed-gear riding in the Big Apple...and as i recall Jed went down...HARD...somewhere in mid-down [Jed seems to have a history of coming into close contact w/ pavement, eh? ;-)]. when Mort got back to town, i heard stories about the cool riding and cool fellas...and man, did i feel like i was missing out!

so that winter/spring of '87 i started riding a little w/ the Majors, and started building up some fitness for this "TOSRV ride" i'd heard so much about. keep in mind this is only my 2nd year of "real" riding! i had only gotten my Trek 510 in june of '86.

May comes around and i've got what i'd thought was fitness (oh, to be so blissfully ignorant again!). the morning of TOSRV arrived...i packed up a some street clothes into my backpack and hopped on my bike for Pate's house w/ Mort. as a newbie, i got VERY lucky that year. i didnt know what the hell i needed, clothing-wise, but the weather was perfect (except for a brutal head-wind). i had no tights, i had no long-sleeve jersey, i had no jacket...i just had 1 short-sleeve jersey and 1 pair of shorts - which i was wearing! now that i think back...now knowing how shitty the weather for TOSRV can be...man, was i lucky!

well, it was chilly that morning, but brilliantly sunny and clear...we rolled up on Pate's house and i was dazzled by all the sweet italian bikes - needless to say, i was intimidated!

everyone saddles up and we start heading out, over to downtown, south on high street, right on frank rd...we make the turn onto 104 south and POW! ...Mort gets a flat! about 10 seconds later...POW! ...Walter get's a flat, too! freakin 100 miles away from P-town, on my first century, and i'm freakin' riding solo - you think Mort or the Majors waited? hell no!

so my green ass is riding solo into the teeth of a brutal headwind...i hop onto the back of several groups that were going too fast for me and blew up several times...it was a long ride into chilli! i had no idea about the ride logistics, where to stop and re-group...i'm just riding. as i cruise thru chilli, fortunately Mort spots me and hollers to get my attention. finally - i've rejoined w/ the Majors and will have some draft!

after messing about and chips were shared, we roll out again...man, i'm lovin' riding w/ a group of my bruhs! a few miles out of chilli, i get freakin' caught behind a red-light...DROPPED AGAIN! you think anyone noticed, much less waited? aw, hell no! with much determination, i notch my Campy Triomphe gruppo (!) into 52x17 and slowly catch back up to the group. man, this is a ROUGH DAY! we roll it into P-town...and i'm absolutely knackered...we're sitting on the side of the road in the sweltering heat...and i'm thinking: "why are we standing in the SUN?!"

these were the days of jed and his guerciotti...i remember him hollering at some other dudes riding guerciottis as they rolled into P-town. we head over to the Findlay St. Baptist church and setup camp...hit the showers at the gym...and hung out recuperating. most of the fellas spent the evening @ the Swick into the wee hours of the morning! me, i was shattered and slept on a freakin' hard floor!

next morning...it was quite chilly, but still sunny. i was foggy in the head as we rolled out en masse. all i really remember that day was a very tough side wind starting from chilly into columbus. the group shattered @ chilly and i forget who i rolled in with. it was sooo sweet to lay down on the grass of the capital lawn in columbus. man, what a ride!

that will be 18 years this may, my brothers!

much love,
wally
